It\u2019s been a hot minute since my last blog post\u2026 mostly because I\u2019ve been out doing what I love most: hiking all over Madeira. And while I’ve been busy posting trail vlogs on Instagram and TikTok, there\u2019s one question that pops up over and over again in my DMs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait \u2014 do I need a reservation now to hike in Madeira?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Yes, but don\u2019t panic. Let\u2019s talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re overwhelmed, confused, or frantically Googling how to book trails while holding a pastel de nata in one hand \u2014 breathe. We\u2019re all figuring this out together, including the employees at the trail entrances. I\u2019ve shown up without a reservation before (yes, me, the person writing this post), and they were honestly so nice and helpful. So, step one: don\u2019t let this ruin your excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is there a fee now? What is this new Madeira trail booking system?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re thinking \u201cwhat do you mean I need to book to go walk in nature?\u201d \u2014 fair. But also: have you seen the number of tourists coming to Madeira lately?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up until 2024, all trails were free. Then came the \u20ac3 fee to support maintenance. Because let\u2019s be real: these trails are stunning, but Madeira isn\u2019t exactly easy terrain. Between the landslides, storms, and dramatic cliffside paths, someone has to keep them safe.<\/p>\n\n\n

But even with the fee, the crowds kept growing. I remember seeing traffic jams at S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o on the news last summer like it was Funchal rush hour. Parking lots overflowing, narrow roads gridlocked, and too many people on delicate paths that weren\u2019t designed for Instagram fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, the government said: Let\u2019s add a reservation system to manage how many hikers are out at a time. The goal is to prevent chaos, protect nature, and honestly \u2014 make the experience more enjoyable for all of us (because nobody likes to wait in line at a hike…). Do I love having to pick a 30-minute start time for my spontaneous hikes? Absolutely not. Do I understand the reasoning? Kinda, yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What trails require a reservation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the not-so-fun part: most official trails now do. Specifically, all PR trails managed by IFCN require a reservation and a fee. PR stands for pequena rota (little route), or sometimes percursos recomendados (recommended trails). These are the marked trails you\u2019ll see everywhere, with red and yellow signs, all under 20 km. IFCN is a government agency – the institute of forests and nature conservation on the island<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can find a full list on the IFCN site<\/a>, but here are the exceptions \u2014 aka the \u201crebel\u201d trails that don\u2019t currently require booking because they are managed by local municipalities instead of IFCN:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
