Getting around Madeira is part of the adventure. With its dramatic landscapes, winding roads, and breathtaking views, every journey becomes an experience to remember. Whether you’re renting a car, joining a tour, or relying on taxis, this guide will help you navigate the island with confidence and ease.

Renting a Car: The Best Option for Flexibility
If you’re looking to fully explore Madeira and reach its hidden gems, renting a car is the way to go. While Madeira’s roads have improved significantly, the island’s steep and narrow streets make driving a unique experience.
Choosing the Right Car
- Stick Shift or Automatic? If you’re not confident driving a manual, opt for an automatic. Madeira’s challenging roads are not the place to learn stick shift!
- Size Matters: You’ll find that most people on Madeira opt for smaller cars to better navigate the narrow roads (I have never seen so many Fiat Pandas in one place before…).
- Traveling with a Group? For more comfort on hilly terrain, consider a vehicle with extra horsepower, especially if you’re carrying passengers and luggage. Roads can be very steep – first gear will be your best friend going uphill and don’t forget to use the lower gears also on your way down to protect the car’s break!
Driving Tips for Madeira
- Standard Gas Prices: One of my favortie things about driving on Madeira is that gas prices are consistent across the island, so there’s no need to search for cheaper stations.
- Navigation: Google Maps works well, but if a route looks impossibly steep or narrow, trust your instincts and stick to the main roads. Madeira’s signage is reliable, and Maps will quickly reroute you.
- Road Conditions: Be prepared for very short highway ramps and exits, frequent tunnels, and two-way roads that sometimes feel like one-way streets.

For Non-Drivers: Tours, Taxis, and Bolt
If driving isn’t your thing, Madeira offers several alternatives:
- Guided Tours: Perfect for stress-free exploration, tours take you to popular destinations without the hassle of navigation (get in touch for more details).
- Taxis and Bolt: Taxis are widely available in cities and tourist areas, and the Bolt app (similar to Uber) is a convenient option. However, in remote areas, it’s best to pre-arrange pickups.
- Public Transport: While buses work well in Funchal and nearby towns, they’re less reliable for reaching remote hiking trails or viewpoints.
Rules of the Road: What You Need to Know
Driving in Madeira comes with its quirks. Keep these tips in mind to navigate safely:
- Speed Limits: The maximum highway speed limit is 90 km/h, with sunny weather signs allowing an extra 10 km/h—a delightful twist compared to stricter rules elsewhere.
- Headlights On: Always keep your lights on, even during the day, as Madeira’s many tunnels make this a necessity.
- Roundabouts: The inner lane is for through traffic, while the outer lane is for the first exit. Signal when leaving to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
- Right of Way: Uphill traffic usually has the right of way. Watch for large vehicles like buses and yield when necessary.

Parking in Madeira
Parking can be a challenge, but knowing the rules will save you time and frustration:
- Color-Coded Spaces:
- Blue: Paid parking (often free on Sundays and holidays).
- White: Free parking.
- White with Letters: Reserved for residents.
- Yellow: No parking zones (most locals ignore this though, so navigate carefully).
- Old Town Funchal: Parking here is tough, but affordable garages starting at €5 per day are a stress-free option.
Why Getting Around Madeira is an Adventure
Madeira’s unique roads and transport options add to its charm. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore remote viewpoints and hidden trails, while taxis, Bolt, and tours offer flexibility for those who prefer not to drive. Public buses provide a budget-friendly option for shorter trips, though they’re less ideal for exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations.
No matter how you choose to get around, every journey in Madeira promises stunning views, thrilling drives, and unforgettable experiences. Drive safely, explore boldly, and let the island’s beauty guide you through every twist and turn.
