Madeira Roadtrip: 10 Jaw-dropping Stops you’ll Love

Madeira might be a small island, but it’s packed with stunning scenery that will leave you in awe. While it’s possible to circle the island in just 3-4 hours, taking your time to stop at some incredible viewpoints along the way will transform your trip into an unforgettable experience. From dramatic cliffs to lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking ocean views, this guide will lead you to the top 10 must-see stops on your Madeira roundtrip.

1. Sunrise at Pico do Facho

Begin your adventure in Machico at Pico do Facho, the perfect spot to watch the sunrise. With views of Machico and the airport on one side, the easternmost point of São Lourenço on the other, and the mountains rising behind you, it’s a magical way to start the day. After soaking in the sunrise, grab breakfast at a local bakery in Machico before heading to your next stop (I recommend Flor de Machico for a local experience).

2. Ponta do Rosto

As you journey to the eastern tip of Madeira, don’t miss this gem. Ponta do Rosto offers a quieter alternative to the starting point of the popular PR8 hike while still providing impressive views of the dramatic “dragon’s tail” landscape. This stop is perfect for snapping photos of the rugged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean stretching endlessly beyond.

3. Santana – Hotel Quinta do Furao

Santana is a charming town known for its traditional thatched houses, but for an incredible viewpoint, head to Hotel Quinta do Furao. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the coastline and cliffs, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a distant waterfall. Before leaving, treat yourself to delicious food at the hotel’s restaurant and grab some fresh sweet potato bread from their bakery.

4. Boaventura – São Cristóvão

As you make your way into Madeira’s lush north, the roads become narrower and windier, but the views become even more breathtaking. Stop at São Cristóvão for a picturesque coastline view and enjoy a coffee overlooking the ocean. If you’re up for a short walk, explore the dramatic north coast along the Caminho da Entrosa trail.

5. Seixal – Miradouro do Véu da Noiva

Seixal is a paradise for waterfall enthusiasts and the miradouro do Véu da Noiva viewpoint offers a spectacular view of one of Madeira’s most iconic waterfalls plunging into the ocean. While in Seixal, take the opportunity to visit the famous black sand beach or swim in the natural rock pools.

6. Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela

This iconic rock formation in Ribeira da Janela is impossible to miss. Known for its unique resemblance to male genitals, it’s a fun and memorable stop for photos. Marvel at the striking volcanic rock against the turquoise waves.

7. Achadas da Cruz

Achadas da Cruz is a west coast treasure featuring one of the steepest cable cars in Europe. For just €5, you can ride down to a pebble beach and a peaceful village at the base of the cliffs. Alternatively, if you’re feeling adventurous, hike down the steep path—but take care, as it’s challenging!

8. Garganta Funda

Arguably one of the most magical viewpoints on Madeira, Garganta Funda offers everything you could hope for: ocean views, dramatic cliffs, a picturesque waterfall, and spectacular sunsets. Limited parking means you may need to walk a short distance, but the views at sunset are worth every step. Nearby, there’s a cozy snack bar to refuel before continuing your journey.

9. Cabo Girão Skywalk

Located near Câmara de Lobos, this glass-bottomed platform is one of Madeira’s most famous attractions. At 580 meters above sea level, it provides breathtaking views of the cliffs, coastline, and terraced fields below making it a must-stop for anyone visiting Madeira!

10. Miradouro do Pinaculo

End your round-trip with a magical view of Funchal at night. Since this viewpoint is located a bit higher up toward Caniçal and is framed by vibrant purple flowers, it offers panoramic views of the city and ocean. It’s also a stunning spot to catch the sunset before heading back into the city.

Tips for Your Madeira Round-trip

  • Driving Essentials: To explore these viewpoints, a car is necessary. While the island is small, many of these stops are in remote areas with limited public transport options.
  • Parking: Parking at the viewpoints can be tight, especially at popular spots. It’s often better to park farther away and walk the rest of the way.
  • Timing:
    • East coast viewpoints are best for sunrise.
    • West coast viewpoints shine at sunset.
    • For the north coast, fog is common in the mornings, so plan your visit for the afternoon for clearer views.
