This hike is one of Madeira’s most popular and unique trails, offering incredible cliffside views, dramatic rock formations, and an endless blue ocean backdrop. It follows a well-maintained path along the easternmost tip of the island, known as Ponta de Sao Lourenco, named after one of the first Portuguese ships to arrive on Madeira.

What Makes PR8 Special?
1. A Unique Landscape Unlike Anywhere Else in Madeira
While most of Madeira is covered in lush greenery, the Ponta de Sao Lourenco area is arid and windswept, shaped by volcanic activity and strong coastal winds. The result? A stunning contrast to the island’s usual scenery, with reddish cliffs, jagged rock formations, and deep blue waters surrounding you on both sides.
2. Spectacular Ocean Views
Throughout the hike, you’ll have panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, with the northern and southern coastlines visible at the same time. On clear days, you can even see Porto Santo – Madeira’s neighbour island – in the distance. Insider Tip: If you’d like to view the landscape from a different perspective, there are also boat tours leaving from the nearby Marina do Quinta do Lorde, giving you a unique perspective from the ocean!
3. A Perfect Sunrise Spot
Due to its eastern location, this hike is one of the best spots on Madeira to catch the sunrise. Be aware though, it does get quite busy in the summer months so make sure to arrive early. Insider Tip: For those who prefer a quieter sunrise experience, the nearby viewpoint Ponta do Rosto is a great option with similar views!
4. A Rewarding Finish at Casa do Sardinha
At the end of the main trail, you’ll find Casa do Sardinha, a small nature reserve station where you can take a break, enjoy the scenery, and even grab a snack before heading back. If you’re up for it, you can continue a short but steep climb to the Pico do Furado viewpoint, offering an even more dramatic perspective of the coastline. Insider Tip: Bring your swimming clothes! There is also a great spot to jump in the water near the end of the trail!

Things to Be Aware of on PR8
1. No Shade – Bring Sun Protection
Unlike many other hikes in Madeira, this trail has little to no tree cover, meaning it can get very hot—especially in the summer months. Be sure to bring:
☀️ Sunscreen
🧢 A hat or cap
💧 Plenty of water (at least 1.5L per person)
2. Strong Winds
Ponta de São Lourenço is one of the windiest areas on the island, so be prepared for strong gusts, especially near the cliff edges. Avoid loose clothing or hats that could blow away!
3. Rocky and Uneven Terrain
The path is well-marked and easy to follow but consists of rocky and uneven sections (especially if you choose to go up the last incline!). Proper hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers are highly recommended to avoid slipping.
4. Limited Facilities
There are no toilets or food stops along the trail except for Casa do Sardinha, where you can buy some small snacks and drinks. Plan accordingly!
How to Get to PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco
By Car:
By far the easiest option! The trailhead is located at Baía d’Abra, about a 30-minute drive from Funchal. There’s a parking lot at the starting point, but it fills up quickly, especially in peak season! People then generally park along the road.
By Bus:
The SAM bus line 113 runs from Funchal to Caniçal. From there, you’ll need to walk about 2 km to the trailhead. Unfortunately, public transport outside of Funchal is not frequent and well developed on the island, so plan enough time if you’re choosing this option!
By Organized Tour:
Especially if you’re not renting a car, organized tours, are a great way to get around. Alternatively, you can catch a taxi there and back if you prefer to go on your own schedule.
Best Time to Hike PR8
🟢 Spring & Fall (March – early June & September – November): The best time to hike, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.
🔴 Summer (July – August): Can be extremely hot with little shade, so start early in the morning. Alternatively (to avoid some of the crowds, I have found going late in the afternoon also a great option. Most people will have finished the hike by then, giving you a more peaceful experience. Make sure to plan enough time to finish before dark.
🟡 Winter (December – February): Can be windy and rainy, but still a great hike on clear days. Check weather forecasts here. Due to the rainier months, the landscape will be a bit more green – it is stunning regardless though!

If you’re looking for a unique Madeira hike that’s different from the lush forests and mountain peaks, PR8 Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco is an unforgettable experience. With its rugged volcanic cliffs, endless ocean views, and rewarding trails, it’s a must-do for nature lovers and photographers alike.
