Why you should visit the tropical garden
Whether you’re a plant lover or just want a relaxing few hours, this garden is worth it. It’s family-friendly (yes, there are even some flamingos!), peaceful, and surprisingly fun – even for people who don’t usually get excited about gardens (like myself).
Perfect for:
- Families with kids
- Couples looking for a romantic stroll
- Solo travelers wanting a break from city buzz or hiking boots
Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a great “in-between” activity – not as intense as a levada walk, but still a breath of fresh air just outside the city. You can easily combine it with other tourist favorites like the Funchal cable car and the Monte toboggan rides (though to be honest, I skipped the toboggans… a bit too touristy for my taste – but hey, some people love the thrill and it’s definitely unique).

How to get to Monte
You’ve got several options:
- Cable car: One of the most scenic ways to reach Monte. It departs from Funchal old town and drops you off just above the gardens. It’s also an attraction in itself with panoramic views over the bay. Get there early and buy your tickets online in advance to avoid lines. Especially when cruise ships are in town, the queues can get long.
- Bus: Several buses go up to Monte. Lines 20, 21, 22, and 48 from Funchal are good options (double-check local schedules or Google Maps before you go). You can pay cash on the bus for tickets.
- Driving: Be cautious – the streets are steep and narrow, and two-way traffic can get tricky. There is free parking just below the cable car station next to the garden entrance.
- Bolt: Super easy and affordable – around 5-7€ from Funchal center, and takes about 15 minutes.

When to go to the gardens
The best time to visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden is definitely spring through late summer (April – August) when the garden is in full bloom and the weather is warm.
- Spring/Summer: Colorful flowers, bright skies, and the best photo ops
- Fall/Winter: Open, but since Monte is located higher up in the mountains, expect cooler temps, cloud cover, and possible rain
Even in the off-season, the garden remains open daily and offers a peaceful atmosphere year-round. Just make sure to check the webcam (netmadeira.com) for the weather. Even when it’s sunny and warm in Funchal, it could be raining up there.

My experience at Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Honestly? I was pleasantly surprised. I tend to avoid touristy spots, but the Monte Palace Tropical Garden felt spacious and calm. Even with other visitors around, the garden’s design helps spread people out – so it never felt too crowded. There are endless corners to explore and paths to wander up and down.
There are also a few museums and art exhibitions inside, which aren’t really my thing, but I still found myself enjoying the experience. After wandering through lush paths and admiring waterfalls and koi ponds, I grabbed a coffee with a view and just… relaxed.

It was a beautiful reminder that not everything needs to be fast-paced or off the beaten path to be special.
