If you’re anything like me and love an adrenaline rush with a view, you’ll want to try the new giant swing and zip line in Madeira by Adrenaline Adventures, which just opened in June in Porto Moniz. As Madeira’s first experience of its kind, this combo is a thrilling must-do for any adventure seeker.

How to Get There
The adventure starts with the drive: Porto Moniz is located on the northwestern tip of Madeira, about a one-hour drive from Funchal. From the center of Porto Moniz, head uphill into the mountains. You’ll eventually find yourself on a narrow dead-end road – don’t panic! Just follow the signs for Adrenaline Adventures all the way to the end. It really does feel like you’re driving into the middle of nowhere, but that’s part of the fun. There is plenty of free parking available along the roadside near the activity base, so you won’t need to stress about where to leave your car.
The Adventure starts with the first zip line in Madeira
After being warmly welcomed at reception, I received a wristband, signed a waiver, and was fitted with brand-new gear. They use a color-coded system based on weight to ensure proper fit and safety. Everything felt secure – especially comforting when you’re about to zip 370 meters above the ground!

We were driven by a buggy up the mountain to the first zip line platform. The wait for other guests gave me just enough time to appreciate the landscape and question my life choices! After a short safety briefing, I was the first one to go! The first zip line is the longer of the two and offers a panoramic 1.5-minute ride across the valley. You’re soaring above lush scenery, spotting the iconic rock formation of Ribeira da Janela, wide open vistas, and even a waterfall splashing down onto the road below. The braking at the end is surprisingly intense, so make sure to brace and follow instructions.
After regrouping, it was time for the second zip line. I was first again, and wow… I wasn’t ready! Steeper, faster, and much more intense than the first, it launched me across the valley with the wind tearing past. I screamed. Then I laughed. Then I held on tight for the braking, which was even rougher than before. It’s thrilling, but definitely not something I’d recommend for anyone with back or neck issues. Back at the reception, I returned my gear and waited for my turn on the giant swing.

Next Up: The Giant Swing
Perched on a cliff’s edge, the swing looks modest at first, until you’re in it. After being strapped into a new harness (again, very calm and careful staff!), I was slowly pulled backward… higher… and higher… until I was 20 meters above the cliff. The operator counted down and let go. My stomach dropped and suddenly I was swinging out into the open air, high above the ground with nothing but ocean and sky in front of me. Believe me, I was screaming a lot but it was super fun at the same time! As I slowed down, I could finally take in the views: coastline, cliffs, and the wide ocean in front of you.
