The best brunch restaurants in Madeira

The other day, I was guiding a group of American girls on a hike (such a fun group by the way! 😊) and during our walk, we started chatting about their plans for the rest of the trip. They told me they had trouble finding a proper breakfast spot in Funchal – before the hike, they only came across bakeries selling sweet pastries and coffee, but they were looking for something more filling. Are there no proper brunch restaurants in Madeira?

A classic Instagram-style brunch isn’t exactly typical in Madeira. Here, breakfast usually means a simple espresso (uma bica) and maybe a pastry. My personal favourites are the Queijadas… But regardless, you won’t find colorful smoothie bowls or oat milk matcha lattes on every corner. But with Funchal growing and adapting more to tourism, some really great brunch spots have popped up recently. If you’re on the hunt for a good brunch restaurants in Madeira or hearty breakfast in Funchal, these are my go-to places:

Bica + queijada

Loft

Probably the most popular option, with multiple locations across Funchal. It’s a safe bet and one of the most well-known brunch restaurants in Madeira! The menu is the same in each spot – think everything from healthy salads and egg dishes to burgers, waffles, and the most loaded pancakes ever (yes, including ice cream, Nutella, chocolate – the works). Service is always solid, and they have plenty of seating inside and outdoors at all locations so you’ll likely find a table (also great to work from with free wifi)!

Brunch Club

This one is a fan favorite, but smaller. It only has a few tables indoors, so don’t be surprised if there’s a queue outside, especially on weekends. The menu is more limited than Loft’s, but it includes all the classics like avocado toast and pancakes. Food is always tasty and beautifully plated, though personally I find it a bit pricier and I do wish they had outdoor seating.

Rise & Dine

This spot just recently opened and I was genuinely surprised – in a good way. Prices were reasonable, the service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. The place has an open kitchen concept, which is fun, but because the decor is quite minimal, it does get a bit noisy. No proper outdoor seating either – outdoor is a glass-covered area next to the kitchen, so I’d opt for indoors which is a bit more quiet (as you can tell, I do like outdoor seating…)

These are my top three picks if you’re staying in Funchal. Outside the city, full-on brunch restaurants in Madeira are a bit harder to come by. But there are still a few great local cafés I love for a good coffee and bite to eat in the morning:

Flor de Machico (Machico)

This is a classic local bakery – always busy, always delicious. It’s budget-friendly and perfect for a quick breakfast. Grab a coffee and pastry, or if you want something heartier, go for a toast or omelette sandwich. It’s not so instagramable but absolutely delicious and authentic. Highly recommend!

Delícias da Bia (Santana)

A local bakery with lots of seating, including outdoor tables (yay 😊). It’s just a short drive from the center of Santana. The prices are very reasonable and the service is always lovely. I absolutely love their croissants! Perfect for a stop while exploring the north coast or going up to Pico Ruivo.

Gato Legal (Ponta do Pargo)

Way out west in Ponta do Pargo, this little café is usually packed. It’s a bit pricier and more touristy, but the coffee here is some of the best I’ve had on the island. They also serve delicious little cakes and some more filling breakfast options. Get there early to get a table!

So there you have it – brunch in Madeira isn’t always easy to find, but it’s definitely possible, especially in Funchal. And if you venture out of the city, you can still enjoy great coffee and a light breakfast with local charm.
