Madeira is full of unforgettable experiencesโbreathtaking hikes, jaw-dropping viewpoints, and of course, Poncha Bars. No trip to the island is truly complete without stepping into a local Poncha bar and ordering a glass (or meter!) of this iconic drink. But what exactly is Poncha, and what makes these little bars so special?
What is Poncha? And Why Are Poncha Bars So Special?
Poncha is a traditional Madeiran drink made with aguardente de cana (sugarcane brandy), fresh lemon or orange juice, and local honeyโall mixed with a wooden stick called a caralhinho. The fresher the ingredients, the better the poncha. Whatever you do, please don’t buy the pre-made poncha at the store… trust me, it tastes nothing like the fresh deliciousness that you will get at the Poncha Bars! (had to put this in bold, because I feel very strongly about this lol)
But itโs not just the drink that makes these little bars so specialโitโs the vibe. A proper Poncha bar is more than just a place to grab a drink. Itโs where locals gather, where travelers feel instantly welcome, and where the ingredients are freshly squeezed on the spot. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and full of character. Youโll likely end up in a conversation with a stranger, munching on peanuts, andโbefore you know itโordering another round.

So, where should you go for your Poncha fix? Here are some of my favorites:
Top Poncha Bars in Funchal
Rei da Poncha
The name says it all: The King of Poncha. This bar is a favorite among both locals and visitorsโand for good reason. Their meter of Ponchas lets you try a variety of different flavors in mini glasses, making it a fun and social experience. Itโs a must if youโre staying in Funchal.
Bar Number 2
A bit more tucked away, this bar has a friendly, laid-back vibe and a great selection of Poncha flavors. Itโs the kind of place where you can chat with locals, get honest recommendations, and sip something you havenโt tried before.
Venda Velha
Lively and upbeat, Venda Velha turns into a weekend party spot, often with DJs and a buzzing atmosphere. If youโre looking for a more energetic Poncha experience, this is the place. The drinks are strong, the music is loud, and the vibe is pure Madeira.

Iconic Poncha Bars Worth the Trip
Bar Filhos D’Anjos โ Cรขmara de Lobos
This is where Poncha was born! Cรขmara de Lobos is the birthplace of the drink, and this small, authentic bar is the real deal. Expect rustic interiors, strong Poncha, and a sense of history in every sip. There’s even pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo visiting on the wall – it doesn’t get much more Madeiran than this!
Taberna da Poncha โ Ribeira Brava
This spot needs no introduction. With its walls covered in business cards and post-its, lively conversations, and top-notch Poncha, Taberna da Poncha is a true island institution. Itโs always packed, always buzzing, and always worth the detour.

Poncha Stops to Combine With Your Hikes
One of my favorite things to do on Madeira? Pair a hike with a well-deserved Poncha stop. Here are a few of my go-to combos:
Bar do Luรญs โ Faial
A great place to wind down after the Eagleโs Rock hike (Penha de รguia) or the nearby Levada do Castelejo. Simple, authentic, and with stunning views of the valley.

Cabo Aรฉreo Cafรฉ โ Sรฃo Jorge
Itโs a beautiful stop with a relaxed atmosphereโperfect after exploring the north coastโs dramatic cliffs down to the ruins of Sao Jorge. Unfortunately, tour busses have also discovered this spot so if your timing is bad, it will be busy…
Sr. Joรฃo โ Ponta do Sol
This cozy local bar sits right near the famous Levada Nova trail. Grab a Poncha after your walk, relax outside, and watch daily life go by in this peaceful village.
Snack Bar Boca da Encumeada โ Encumeada
Tucked into the heart of Madeiraโs mountains, this spot is ideal after tackling PR21, PR22, or PR17. The views are fantastic, the staff is welcoming, and nothing tastes better than a cold Poncha after a tough hike.
Saรบde! (Cheers!)
Whether youโre staying in Funchal or exploring remote villages, Poncha bars are everywhereโeach with their own flavor, energy, and charm. Theyโre part of what makes Madeira feel so warm and welcoming. So go ahead, raise a glass, try a new fruit blend, and toast to your adventure on this incredible island.
