Levada do Norte: From Câmara de Lobos to Cabo Girão
This Levada walk is a hidden gem for anyone looking for a mix of rural charm, lush nature, and spectacular views—just a few minutes from Funchal. The trail follows the Levada do Norte from Câmara de Lobos all the way to the famous Cabo Girão viewpoint, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. It’s the perfect combination of a relaxed Levada stroll and a show-stopping destination.
Please note: This hike is recommended only for those who are physically fit and experienced with mountain or levada trails. If you’re unfamiliar with the area or unsure about your abilities, it’s best to go with a local guide. Always check the current trail conditions and weather before starting, and never underestimate Madeira’s changing terrain and climate.
Trail Overview – Levada do Norte
- Distance: approx. 11–12 km (one way)
- Duration: about 3 hours
- Starting Point: Câmara de Lobos (near Fidy Poncha Bar)
- End Point: Cabo Girão viewpoint
- Difficulty: Easy
The trail follows the Levada almost the entire way—flat, well-maintained, and a joy to walk. It starts out winding between local homes, then quickly escapes into greener and quieter surroundings. One thing to be aware of: many houses have dogs in the yard, and they’ll bark as you walk by (a very typical Madeira experience!).
Some sections of the path run along steeper drops without railings, but the trail is always wide enough to walk comfortably. There’s also a short tunnel toward the end—nothing too intense, but a headlamp won’t hurt.

What Makes This Hike Special
I love this trail because it’s so close to Funchal, but still feels like a full nature escape. Once you leave the houses behind, you’re completely surrounded by greenery—with stunning valley views and glimpses of the ocean.
The proximity to the city, the ease of the trail, and the views make it a perfect half-day hike with plenty of wow factor.
Best Time to Go & Trail Atmosphere
I’ve done this trail at different times of day, and it’s never crowded. You might pass a few other hikers here and there, but overall it stays quiet—until you reach Cabo Girão, that is. As one of Madeira’s top tourist spots, the viewpoint is usually packed, especially in high season and during the daytime.
If you can, try to arrive right before sunset—the light is magical, the crowds are gone, and you’ll get one of the best golden hour views on the island. The only downside: unless you’ve parked a car at the end, you’ll need to take a taxi or Bolt back.

Insider Tips & Refreshment Stops
- Start at Fidy Poncha Bar: This local Poncha bar is right by the Levada entrance and is a great spot for a pre-hike energy boost (aka freshly squeezed Poncha). From here, just follow the road up and you will see the levada trail on your left.
- Bar Oriental: Located about halfway along the trail, this charming bar has a lovely outdoor terrace and ocean views—ideal for a short break. Just take a short detour and follow the giant BAR that you’ll see painted on a wall along the way – you can’t miss it!

- Plan Your Return: If you’re hiking one way only, it’s easy to grab a taxi or Bolt from Cabo Girão—there’s always something available.
The Levada do Norte trail between Câmara de Lobos and Cabo Girão is an underrated but incredibly scenic walk. It’s the perfect mix of calm nature, relaxed hiking, and an iconic viewpoint to finish. If you’re looking for a quiet trail that ends in a true highlight—this is your next Madeira adventure.
