This trail combines the island’s breathtaking natural beauty with a fun and relaxed hiking experience—perfect for beginners, nature lovers, and even four-legged friends.

What Makes the Levada do Rei Hike Special?

The Levada do Rei trail winds gently through Madeira’s UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest, offering one jaw-dropping view after another. It’s a classic levada hike: mostly flat, shaded by trees, and bursting with greenery.

One of the coolest parts? About halfway along the trail, you’ll walk under a waterfall that cascades directly onto the path! It’s a refreshing and fun moment—and a perfect reason to bring your raincoat.

Another hidden gem is a smaller waterfall just off the main trail. About an hour into the hike, keep an eye out for a sharp bend in the levada. On your right-hand side, a small path leads you to a beautiful side waterfall—a perfect spot for a quick break and some photos.

The trail finishes at a peaceful river, a lovely place to relax, refuel with some snacks, and soak up the serenity of Madeira’s north coast forests.

Insider Tips for Hiking PR18 Levada do Rei

  • Beginner-friendly: This trail is suitable for almost all fitness levels—great for a first levada experience!
  • Avoid after heavy rains: While the trail is well-maintained, it can get very muddy after wet weather. Proper hiking shoes are a must.
  • Go later in the day: This trail is quite popular, especially during the tourist season. To enjoy a quieter hike, start in the late afternoon when most hikers have already finished.
  • Bring a rain jacket: If you want to stay dry when you pass under the waterfall, a raincoat is your best friend.
  • Pack water and snacks: The river at the end is a peaceful picnic spot. You can refill your bottle at some of the smaller waterfalls along the way.
  • Dog-friendly: If you’re traveling with a dog, this is a great hike to bring them along! Just be ready for a muddy dog by the end.

Nearby Places to Check Out

  • Local Restaurant: Right at the trailhead, there’s a cozy restaurant with outdoor seating—perfect for a pre- or post-hike drink.
  • Bolo do Caco Grill & Pizza: Just a short drive away, this popular spot serves traditional Madeiran food with amazing coastal views.
  • Arco de São Jorge Viewpoint: After your hike, make a quick stop here to take in the dramatic north coast cliffs and the endless Atlantic Ocean.

Levada do Rei offers an easy-going, scenic introduction to Madeira’s stunning landscapes—ideal for beginners or anyone wanting a relaxed nature walk.
