7 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Visiting Madeira (and How to Plan Better)

Madeira is a dream destinationโ€”but only if you plan it right. From winding mountain roads to microclimates and packed trails, this island can surprise even seasoned travelers. In this post, Iโ€™m sharing 7 of the most common mistakes Iโ€™ve seen (or made myself!) when exploring Madeiraโ€”and how you can avoid them. Letโ€™s make your trip smoother, more scenic, and a lot more fun.

1. Underestimating Driving Times

Madeira may look small on the map, but donโ€™t be fooled. The roads are narrow, twisty, and often steepโ€”and traffic around Funchal or in tunnels like the one from Ponta do Sol to Ribeira Brava can back up fast during rush hours.

Personal tip: I used to drive back from workouts in Ponta do Sol, and it would always take 10+ minutes longer because traffic piled up in the tunnel. Try to avoid driving during rush hours (9am in the morning, 5-6pm in the evening)

What to do: Add extra time for all drives. Expect 20โ€“30% longer than Google Maps says, and avoid morning and evening rush hours if possible.

2. Planning Too Much for One Day

The temptation to do โ€œeverythingโ€ is real – but itโ€™ll leave you exhausted and stressed. Madeira is best enjoyed at a slower pace. Even after one year on the island, I still have more hikes on my to-do list and discover new viewpoints. You’ll never be able to enjoy it all so enjoy the bit that you can fit into your itinerary – one memory at a time.

What works better: Let your day unfold. Leave time for spontaneous poncha breaks, unplanned photo stops, or just a moment to take in the views. The best memories come when youโ€™re not rushing.

3. Switching Accommodations Too Often

It sounds logical to stay in different areas to explore the island. But trust me – itโ€™s more hassle than itโ€™s worth for most trips. You lose time checking in, packing up, and moving around when everything on the island is just a quick drive away – no matter where you are staying.

What I recommend: If youโ€™re staying less than 2 weeks, base yourself in Funchal. Everything is within an hourโ€™s drive. For longer trips, consider adding a few nights in quieter places like Santana, Machico, or Porto Moniz – especially if you plan to do lots of hikes or activities in a specific region of the island.

4. Only Visiting the Instagram Spots

Places like PR1 or 25 Fontes are stunning – but also crowded. Thereโ€™s so much more to discover on Madeira if youโ€™re willing to go off the beaten path. Trust me – it’ll be worth it!

What to do: Use my blog or travel guide to discover hidden gems like Poรงo dos Normados, Levada do Castelejo, or Garganta Funda. Theyโ€™re just as beautiful and instagram worthy – and way less packed.

5. Ignoring the Weather

The weather changes fast in Madeira. You could start in the rain and end up in blazing sun above the clouds.

Like that time we hiked Pico Grande in full sun after starting in thick cloudsโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t wear sunscreen and ended up with sunburn and terrible backpack tan lines. Lesson learned.

What to do: Always check live webcams before you go. Pack layers, wear sunscreen, and assume youโ€™ll encounter both rain and shine on the same day. If the weather looks really bad on one side of the island, chances are high that it’s sunny on the other side, so stay flexible with your itinerary and move things around as needed for the best experience and the most sunshine.

6. Going to the Best Spots at the Worst Time

Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro is stunningโ€ฆ but unless you arrive over an hour early, expect chaos and parking frustration. Timing is everything.
