1. Levada do Norte to Cabo Girรฃo โ The Iconic Sunset Finish
If you’re chasing an epic sunset, Cabo Girรฃo – the iconic glass skywalk viewpoint – delivers in a big way. While itโs usually packed during the day, late in the afternoon the crowds thin out dramatically. Catching the sun sink into the Atlantic from this cliffside is a breathtaking way to end your day. Depending on your starting point, you can hike quite a long trail on this levada though, so make sure to time it right for sunset. I remember one time we started this one way too late and ended up running to catch the sunsetโbut it was absolutely worth it.
Trail logistics:
- Choose your starting point: Fidy Poncha Bar (for an 11 km hike, 3โ4 hours) or Bar Oriental (short 5 km walk, 1.5โ2 hours)
- Mostly flat levada, with some elevation in the last stretch up to Cabo Girรฃo
- One-way hike: plan a taxi or Bolt ride back after sunset
Pro tip: Donโt walk this one in the dark as some sections have steep drops – use a flashlight if needed, but ideally finish your hike at the viewpoint and ride back.

2. Levada Nova in Tabua โ A Hidden Gem with Valley Views
A peaceful, lesser-known trail in Tabua, Levada Nova offers sweeping views over green valleys and the ocean beyond. Itโs a beginner-friendly, breezy walk ideal for a golden-hour stroll. We discovered this recently and I enjoyed it so much! Super easy walk, amazing views, and you can stop for a snack or poncha at a local bar on the way.
Trail logistics:
- 5 km out-and-back (1.5 hours total)
- Start at Levada Nova โ Tabua and head toward Snack Bar Ribeira da Tabua
- Optional: continue further for another viewpoint or turn back from the cafรฉ
Pro tip: Time your return to watch the sunset from the trail itself while walking back – no crowds, just silence and sea views. The trail is wide and accessible but bring a flashlight just in case for after it gets dark.

3. Pico Ruivo (PR1.2) โ Sunset Above the Clouds
For a more adventurous sunset, head to Madeiraโs highest peak: Pico Ruivo. This hike gives you the rare chance to watch the sunset above the clouds – a truly surreal experience. The PR1.2 trail is well maintained and good to walk. However, you do cover quite a bit of elevation to get to the top, so be prepared. We brought beers the first time we did it to enjoy them at the peak. Iโd do that again any day! But donโt linger too long at the peak and bring a flashlight for the way back!
Trail logistics:
- Park at Achada do Teixeira, then hike 2.8 km each way (about 1 hour up, 45 minutes down)
- Elevation: around 370 meters, so expect a moderate challenge
- Plan to arrive at the peak 45 minutes before sunset for the best golden hour views
Pro tip: Bring layers, snacks, and a flashlight. The descent after sunset can be chilly and dark.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or coming back to explore more, these sunset hikes on Madeira offer the perfect mix of beauty, ease, and adventure. Don’t forget your camera – and maybe a poncha or two. ๐
