The best beaches near Funchal to cool off this summer

When Madeira’s summer sun is blazing and the streets of Funchal are warm enough to fry a pastel de nata, there’s nothing better than cooling off with a dip in the Atlantic. Luckily, some of the beaches near Funchal are fantastic spots for a refreshing swim, whether you’re after a quick lunch-break splash or a whole afternoon by the sea.

Praia Formosa – The Classic Choice

Praia Formosa is the most popular of the beaches near Funchal. Stretching along the city’s west coast, it’s a mix of pebbles, black sand, and a few sandy patches that fill up quickly in summer. The promenade is perfect for a stroll – you can even walk all the way to Câmara de Lobos – and the beach bars are great for a cold drink.
The water here is open to the ocean, so waves can be strong. Keep an eye out for rocks and use common sense when swimming. Praia Formosa is also magical at sunset, when the sky turns golden and the waves glow in the fading light.

Praia de São Tiago – Right in the Center

If you just need a quick cool-down in the middle of the day, head to the swimming area right next to the yellow Forte de São Tiago in Funchal’s old town. A paved ramp makes getting in easy despite the rocky surroundings, and there are bathrooms, changing rooms, and a snack bar on site. The paved areas are perfect for sunbathing between dips. A popular spot among locals as well!

Reis Magos Beach – My Personal Favorite

A short 10-minute drive east to Caniço brings you to Praia dos Reis Magos – a spot loved by locals. It has everything you need: easy water access with ladders and steps, a sheltered “kiddie” area, and plenty of space along the rocky beach or the promenade. There are wooden sunbeds, a couple of cafés, and stunning views along the coast. The local vibe and calm waters make this my personal go-to beach when I want a relaxing swim.

Whether you’re in Funchal for a quick stop or a week-long stay, taking time for a swim is the perfect way to beat the August heat. From the lively Praia Formosa to the local charm of Reis Magos, there are plenty of beaches near funchal to choose from.
