The best seafood restaurants on Madeira

Madeira is an island surrounded by the Atlantic, so of course seafood is a must. Funny enough, I used to be vegetarian when I first moved hereโ€ฆ but with fresh tuna, octopus, and the iconic espada (scabbard fish) on every menu, I slowly gave in. Now, I canโ€™t imagine skipping the seafood when eating out. Whether itโ€™s traditional dishes like lapas (grilled mussels) or espada with banana, or something more modern and fusion – thereโ€™s something here for every seafood lover. Here are 6 seafood restaurants in Madeira that Iโ€™ve personally tried and loved:

Peixaria da Avenida, Funchal

Just across the street from the beautiful Parque Santa Catarina, this place doesnโ€™t look like much from the outside โ€” but donโ€™t let that fool you. The seafood pasta is one of the best Iโ€™ve had anywhere, and the tuna steak is cooked just right every time. I take all my visiting friends here, and itโ€™s also where I had my first date with my boyfriend (our relationship was clearly off to a strong start). Friendly service, fast kitchen, and fresh fish โ€” what more could you want?

O Basalto, Funchal

Located right below the buzzing Barreirinha Bar, Basalto restaurant sits directly above the sea with amazing sunset views. Itโ€™s romantic, a bit fancy, and totally worth it. Start with the tuna tartar and then go for the seafood pasta or rice to share. Last time, we ordered the seafood pasta for two and still had leftovers for lunch the next day. Just a heads-up: service can be a bit slow when theyโ€™re packed, but the view more than makes up for it.

Fernandoโ€™s, Funchal

Tucked away in a small side street near the main square, this little gem is easy to miss โ€” but absolutely worth the effort. There are only a few tables inside and some more outside, so either book ahead or arrive early. While they also serve meat and pasta, the fish is where itโ€™s at. The tuna steak I had here was perfect, and they even served a proper side salad (not just lettuce and tomato โ€” Madeira folks will know what I mean). It feels like a cozy family-run place with genuine hospitality.

Leme Marisqueira, Calheta

If you’re in Calheta for a beach day, donโ€™t miss this marina-side restaurant. Itโ€™s a casual spot with fresh seafood and surprisingly affordable prices. I had the scabbard fish picado in a rich tomato sauce and loved every bite. Great portion sizes too, which is always a win after swimming all day. Try to catch sunset while youโ€™re there โ€” the marina view is lovely.

O Ideal, Paul do Mar

Paul do Mar has a few good seafood spots, but O Ideal is my favorite. It’s relaxed, right across from the beach, and has that friendly local feel. You can build your own picado (a traditional Madeiran dish for sharing) with options like calamari, octopus, or scabbard fish. I love the laid-back vibes here โ€” perfect after a coastal drive or a day at the beach.

Bar Praia do Laje, Seixal

This hidden gem is on Madeiraโ€™s quieter north coast, just a short drive from Seixal Beach. Itโ€™s simple, local, and delicious. They grill the fish right there next to the sea, and the limited menu means everything is freshly cooked. Fewer tourists make this feel like an authentic island escape.

If you love seafood (or even if you’re still warming up to it), Madeira is the place to dive in. The fish is fresh, the views are stunning, and thereโ€™s nothing like a sunset meal by the sea.
