Pico Ruivo vs. Pico do Arieiro: Which peak is better?

Madeira is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes and a visit to the highest peaks should be on everybody’s itinerary when coming to the island. I still remember my first sunset up on Pico do Arieiro. It was actually a super cloudy day, but just as the sun was setting, the clouds started to clear and turned the most beautiful red and purple colors. Iโ€™ve been back countless times but have never seen it quite like that again. Regardless, every visit still blows my mind โ€” whether youโ€™re above the clouds, have a clear view down to the sea, or even end up walking in the clouds. Itโ€™s a great place to be. If you’re planning a trip to Madeira, chances are youโ€™ve already heard about the islandโ€™s iconic peaks. But between the highest peaks โ€” Pico Ruivo vs. Pico do Arieiro โ€” which one is really worth your time? Hereโ€™s a side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

Pico do Arieiro

Stats
At 1.810 m, Pico do Arieiro is the third-highest peak on Madeira and without a doubt the more popular one. Itโ€™s located in the southeast of the island, about a 30โ€“40 minute drive from Funchal.

Access
The good news is: you can drive right up to the top. There are two parking lots (paid, card only). The upper one is right at the peak but fills up quickly, even before sunrise. The lower lot is about 800 meters down, so itโ€™s a 15โ€“20 minute uphill walk, but there’s also a shuttle bus available. During the day, road access to the very top may be blocked to avoid traffic jams.

You can also get there via public bus (Horรกrios do Funchal, twice a day) or join one of the many organized tours. At the top, thereโ€™s a cafรฉ, gift shop, and toilets.

Trails
You donโ€™t have to hike at all to reach Pico do Arieiro, but there are some great trails in the area. The most famous is the PR1 โ€” Vereda do Arieiro (also known as the peak-to-peak hike). Right now, the full trail is still closed, expected to reopen in April 2026, but you can still walk the first 1.2 km to the โ€œStairway to Heavenโ€ โ€” a narrow stretch of stairs with dramatic drops on each side.

The trail has a lot of up and down stairs but is totally worth it for the views. If you’re looking for something quieter, try the PR3 trail through the Parque Ecolรณgico. You can hike down to Poiso โ€” or do it the other way around if you’re up for a challenge. I recently did the hike up with a friend and then just hitchhiked down, which worked out great. A friendly German couple gave us a lift. If you’re heading back to Funchal, youโ€™ll probably find someone to take you.

Scenery & Atmosphere
The views are absolutely incredible โ€” looking into the rugged mountain ranges and, on clear days, all the way down to Porto da Cruz and Sรฃo Lourenรงo. But itโ€™s never going to be a quiet spot. Still, Iโ€™ve found it surprisingly peaceful even with the sunrise crowds, and most people are respectful. The only downside is that the narrow trail sections can get congested, and you often have to wait for oncoming hikers. Iโ€™ve had the best experiences either about 1.5 hours after sunrise or later in the afternoon.

Personal Experience
Pico do Arieiro holds a special place in my heart. I love it both for sunrise and sunset โ€” maybe I even prefer sunset a bit more because the sun sets directly into the mountain ranges. Its closeness to Funchal makes it super convenient. I donโ€™t go there when Iโ€™m craving a true hiking experience, but I always return to appreciate the views.

Pico Ruivo

Stats
Pico Ruivo is actually the tallest peak on Madeira, at 1.861 m. Itโ€™s located in Santana, in the north of the island.

Access
The closest parking lot is Achada do Teixeira (free), located just under 1.600 m. From there, you need to hike โ€” thereโ€™s no direct access to the summit by car. No public transport goes here, and there are far fewer tours. Youโ€™ll need to drive through Santana to reach it (there’s only one road leading up), and the drive takes about an hour from Funchal. The long drive and required hike keep a lot of tourists away.

Trail
The trail to the top is PR1.2, 2.8 km one way. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour each way, and itโ€™s well-maintained and easy to follow. Thereโ€™s a mountain hut along the way and a small cafรฉ at the parking lot. For those who want a serious challenge, thereโ€™s also the PR1.1 starting in Ilha at around 500 m elevation. Most other trails in the area are currently closed due to wildfire damage.

Scenery & Atmosphere
The scenery is just as breathtaking as at Arieiro โ€” you can even see Arieiro from the trail! But it feels less touristy and more peaceful. With fewer crowds, I find it easier to truly connect with nature here. Thereโ€™s also that shared feeling of accomplishment with others who made the hike to the top.

Personal Experience
I really wish Pico Ruivo wasnโ€™t so far from Funchal, because Iโ€™d love to visit more often. When I was based in Santana, it was so accessible and I absolutely loved it. My first sunset hike was unforgettable โ€” there were just three of us, but we made friends with another group at the top. It was a peaceful, respectful group. And the hike made the sunset even more rewarding. If youโ€™re going for sunset, donโ€™t forget a flashlight for the way down!

Pico Ruivo vs. Pico do Arieiro, which one is better?

If you only have limited time on Madeira, go with Pico do Arieiro. Itโ€™s much easier to fit into your itinerary and absolutely worth the trip. But if youโ€™re looking for a more intimate hiking adventure, I highly recommend Pico Ruivo. The extra challenge makes the experience feel so much more rewarding.
