What to do on rainy days on Madeira

Let’s be honest: the weather in Madeira can be a bit of a wildcard. One moment you’re soaking up the sun, the next you’re watching clouds roll in. That’s the reality of island life, especially one with such diverse microclimates. If you’re planning a trip here, be ready for anything. My top tip? Build some flexibility into your itinerary. Stay at least a week so you can shuffle plans around depending on the weather.

Rain in Madeira doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. Here are my favorite things to do when the skies aren’t on your side:

1. Chase the Sun

This might be my number one Madeira travel tip: don’t assume the weather is the same everywhere. Thanks to the island’s microclimates, it might be cloudy in Funchal but sunny over in Ponta do Sol or Caniço. Just yesterday we left sunny Funchal for a hike up in Fanal, where we unfortunately spent 4 hours hiking in the rain and mud and cold. When we returned to Funchal, we were greeted by 20 degrees and sunshine again. In general, the south side tends to be drier than the north, and sometimes the best move is to drive up into the mountains above the clouds. I always check the live webcams on netmadeira.com and go where the sun is. Being flexible makes all the difference!

2. Visit a Museum

If it’s one of those rare days where the whole island is wet and gray, it’s time to head indoors. Madeira isn’t necessarily known for its museums, but there are a few gems worth exploring. Football fans will love the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum in Funchal, and the quirky Banana Museum in Ponta do Sol is a fun and very on-brand experience for this tropical island.

3. Go Kart Racing… Under an Airport Runway

Yes, this sounds completely made up, but it’s real. Madeira has a go-kart track built under the iconic airport runway bridge. Not only does that make it a pretty unique experience, but the whole track is covered, so it’s a perfect rainy-day activity. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or just want to race against the clock, it’s a blast.

4. Madeira Wine or Poncha Bar Crawl

If all else fails, let the rain be your excuse to dive into Madeira’s drinking culture. Tour a winery like Blandy’s in Funchal for a tasting and a bit of history. Not a fan of sweet fortified wines? Try Poncha! This local drink is strong, citrusy, and comes in a variety of flavors. My favorite indoor-friendly bars include Venda Velha, Bar Number 2, and outside of Funchal, the legendary Taberna da Poncha in Ribeira Brava.

Don’t let a little drizzle dampen your adventure. Madeira has plenty to offer no matter the forecast.
