Madeira is often called a hiking paradise and honestly, it lives up to the hype. Most itineraries include at least some of the popular levada walks or mountain hikes. But what if you don’t feel like hiking every single day? Or the weather just doesn’t cooperate, which happens more often than you’d think here on the island. The good news is that Madeira has so much more to offer. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, there are plenty of fun things to do for all ages.

4×4 Jeep Tours – my personal highlight
If you want to see a lot of the island without putting in the physical effort of a hike, this is hands down one of the best things you can do. A 4×4 jeep tour combines off-road adventure, sightseeing, and local insights in such a fun way. You’ll explore regions that you probably wouldn’t reach on your own, including hidden viewpoints and less crowded spots. Expect a full day out, it’s usually quite long, but completely worth it.
There are a lot of companies offering tours, but I personally recommend Desurbaniza-te. They’re a small, locally owned company that not only show you the main highlights but also their personal off-the-beaten-path favorites. You get a mix of nature, culture, and history, all presented in a really authentic way.

Boat Tours – something for everyone
Being on an island, getting out on the water is kind of a must. And the cool thing is that there are so many different types of boat tours depending on what you’re into. One of the most popular options is a speedboat dolphin and whale watching tour. Yes, you can actually spot dolphins all year round, and mornings usually give you the best chances.
If you’re more into a relaxed vibe, I highly recommend a catamaran sunset cruise. This is my personal favorite. Watching the sun go down from the ocean with a swim stop along the way is just such a good experience.
And then there’s deep sea fishing. I tried it once with friends visiting from Florida. Not exactly my thing, and we didn’t catch anything which made it even funnier, but it’s still a cool experience. What’s unique about Madeira is how quickly the ocean gets deep, so you don’t even have to go far offshore. Just make sure you’re not prone to seasickness before booking anything.

Canyoning – for the adventure lovers
If you’re looking for something active but different from hiking, canyoning is probably the most popular adventure activity on the island. You basically move through a canyon by jumping, sliding, and rappelling down waterfalls. It’s such an immersive way to experience Madeira’s nature and definitely gets your adrenaline going.
My personal recommendation is Vertical Expeditions with Peter. He knows the island inside out, keeps the groups small, and really makes the whole experience feel safe and fun at the same time.

Beaches and natural pools – unique swimming spots
Madeira isn’t your typical beach destination, but that’s exactly what makes it special. Instead of endless sandy beaches, you’ll find black sand beaches and natural volcanic pools. In summer, the water is actually surprisingly warm. Even in winter, you’ll see people swimming, but I’ll be honest, that’s not for me.
Some of the most famous spots are Porto Moniz and Seixal, both on the north coast. But you don’t have to go that far. Even near Funchal, you can check out Doca dos Cavacas, which is a great and more accessible option.

Exploring Funchal – a slower day
Funchal is often a bit underrated in my opinion. At first glance, it might not seem like there’s that much to do, but once you start exploring, you’ll realize there’s actually a lot. The classics include the Mercado dos Lavradores, the cathedral, and taking the cable car up to Monte where you can visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
There are also plenty of museums, from art and history to, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo. And then there’s the food scene. So many great restaurants, poncha bars, and wine tastings like the one at Blandy’s Wine Lodge. It’s the perfect option for a more relaxed day in between adventures.
Hiking might be what Madeira is most famous for, but it’s definitely not the only reason to visit. Whether you’re cruising along the coast, jumping down waterfalls, or exploring the island by jeep, there’s so much variety here.
And if you want to give hiking a try after all (which you definitely should!), I’ve got you covered. Check out my PR Trails Guide, where I break down some of the best official trails on the island to help you choose the right ones for your trip.
