Are you looking for a peaceful escape into Madeira’s untouched beauty? Poço dos Normados in Boaventura is the perfect destination. Nestled in one of the island’s most lush and tranquil regions, this hidden gem features a serene waterfall, a crystal-clear natural pool, and breathtaking mountain views.
Boaventura is home to dramatic landscapes and greenery. Poço dos Normados is one of its best-kept secrets. The short 15-minute walk to the falls is just enough to feel like an adventure while still being accessible.

How to Get There
Your journey begins at the nearby bus stop in Boaventura. From there, follow a charming path that weaves between houses before descending into the valley. As you make your way down, you might even spot a few friendly goats along the trail.
When you reach the bridge in the valley, take the stairs down. Then, look for a narrow path on the left side of the bridge. This will lead you directly to the falls. The last stretch involves a bit of scrambling, so wear sturdy shoes and avoid visiting after heavy rain as the rocks can get slippery.
What Makes Poço dos Normados Special?
Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a gentle waterfall cascading into a peaceful pool. It’s perfect for cooling off or simply relaxing by the water. The secluded location means you’re likely to have the spot all to yourself, apart from the occasional goat of course! It’s the kind of place where you can truly disconnect and enjoy nature at its finest.
Make a Day of It
Poço dos Normados is a fantastic standalone destination, but it can also be combined with nearby levada hikes for a full day of adventure. Explore trails like the Levada das Faias, Levada dos Tornos, or Levada da Achada Grande, which are all located in the immediate area. These hikes offer a chance to experience Madeira’s famous levada system while taking in the lush greenery of Boaventura.

Whether you’re looking to dip your toes in the cool waters, take in the stunning scenery, or pair the visit with a scenic levada hike, Poço dos Normados is a true hidden gem. Make sure to add it to your Madeira itinerary and enjoy a slice of tranquility in this beautiful corner of the island.
