A Hidden Gem Hike Near Pico Arieiro: PR3 + PR4 Loop

Looking for a hike near Pico Arieiro while the famous PR1 trail on Madeira is closed? I’ve got you covered. Just the other day, I discovered a lesser-known but absolutely stunning alternative: a loop combining the PR3 and PR4 trails starting at Poço da Neve, just below the Pico do Arieiro parking lot.

Please note: This hike is recommended only for those who are physically fit and experienced with mountain or levada trails. If you’re unfamiliar with the area or unsure about your abilities, it’s best to go with a local guide. Always check the current trail conditions and weather before starting, and never underestimate Madeira’s changing terrain and climate.

If you find my tips helpful and want to support more blog posts like this, you can buy me a poncha here! Every bit of support helps me hike more, write more, and share these beautiful trails with you.

Trail Details:

  • Length: 10 km
  • Elevation gain: 500 m
  • Duration: 3.5 to 4.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Why Start at the Top?

We began our hike at Poço da Neve, which is actually the highest point of the route. This means starting with a downhillsection along the PR4 – Levada do Barreiro. Personally, I love starting with a descent—it makes the beginning feel like a breeze, and once you’ve powered through the uphill at the end, you’re done and ready for a rewarding poncha or meal.

If you prefer getting the uphill challenge out of the way early, you could start at the lower entrance near the Parque Ecológico do Funchal and follow PR3 upwards first instead.

The Trail Experience

Heading down PR4, you follow the scenic Levada do Barreiro with sweeping valley views. There are a few narrow parts along the trail, but they’re manageable and secured with ropes where necessary. It’s a peaceful and less-frequented trail, so chances are you’ll enjoy some solitude in nature.

Toward the end of the PR4 section, the trail is officially closed before reaching Casa do Barreiro. Turn left and follow the clearly marked detour towards Ribeira das Cales. After cutting across for a bit, you’ll eventually meet the PR3 trail—this is your cue to start climbing back up.

PR3 is a beautiful mountain trail that winds through the rugged and lush terrain of the Parque Ecológico. The climb is steady, so take your time and watch your footing. Along the way, you’ll pass moss-covered trees, waterfalls, and small riverbeds – especially magical if you’re hiking on a misty day, like we did. The fog made everything feel enchanted.

Eventually, the trail leads you back to Poço da Neve, completing the loop.

Practical Tips

  • Avoid midday heat, especially in the summer since this trail is exposed in most sections.
  • Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and snacks.
  • Wear proper hiking shoes – parts of the trail can be muddy or rocky.
  • Check trail conditions in advance, especially for closures or detours.

After-Hike Treats

Once you’re back, you can either:

  • Walk or drive up to Pico do Arieiro for a coffee with panoramic views,
  • Or stop at Abrigo do Poiso on your way down for one of the best Prego sandwiches on the island—delicious and budget-friendly!
