Complete guide to a sunrise on Pico do Arieiro

Seeing the sunrise above the clouds at Pico do Arieiro is one of those โ€œyou have to do itโ€ experiences when coming to Madeira. And honestly? As clichรฉ as it soundsโ€”itโ€™s still worth it. Every single time. Wellโ€ฆย mostย of the time. Because if thereโ€™s one thing you should know about Madeira, itโ€™s that the weather doesnโ€™t care about your plans.

The Early Start (and Why Preparation Matters)

This time, sunrise was at 7:00 AM, which meant my alarm went off at 5:00. Not funโ€”but manageable.

The trick is simple:ย prepare everything the night before. At that hour, your brain shouldnโ€™t be making decisions.

I had my warm clothes ready (and yes, you will need themโ€”even in summer), along with a thick jacket, hat, and gloves. I packed my headlamp, water, andโ€”most importantlyโ€”a hot tea. That part is non-negotiable for me.

By 5:30 AM (okayโ€ฆ 5:35 by the time Jorge was ready), we were in the car heading up.

From Funchal, the drive takes about 35โ€“40 minutes. As you get higher, the road narrows a bit, but itโ€™s in great condition and recently redone, so nothing to worry about. At some point, youโ€™ll likely notice a quiet little convoy of rental cars all heading in the same directionโ€”everyone chasing the same sunrise.

The Weather Question (Everyone Asks This)

So how do you know if the sunrise will actually be good? Short answer:ย you donโ€™t.

Itโ€™s always a bit of a gamble. Clouds can roll in quickly and unexpectedly, no matter what the forecast says. That being said, there are a couple of things Iโ€™ve learned:

  • Aย clear forecastย definitely helps
  • Aย clear sunset the evening beforeย is usually a very good sign

But even thenโ€”nothing is guaranteed. Thatโ€™s just part of the experience.

Where to Park (and What Most People Get Wrong)

One thing many people donโ€™t realize: you can drive all the way to the top of Pico do Arieiro.ย Thereโ€™s no hike required to get there.

At the summit, thereโ€™s a parking lot with about 50 spaces. It fills up fastโ€”usually at least an hour before sunrise. Parking here is paid, and thereโ€™s a one-hour limit, so itโ€™s really only practical if youโ€™re planning to watch the sunrise and leave. A bit further down the road, thereโ€™s a second parking area (also paid). Youโ€™ll pass it on your way up, so itโ€™s hard to miss. From there, itโ€™s about a 15โ€“20 minute walk uphill to the peak. If youโ€™re coming from here in the dark, a headlamp is essential.

And just to say it clearlyโ€”donโ€™t park along the road or double park. People do it, but it causes chaos and you will risk getting a ticket.

The Classic Sunrise Viewpoint

Most people head straight to the main viewpointโ€”and for good reason.

From the top parking lot, itโ€™s just a short walk to the east-facing viewpoint. No hiking needed. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Sรฃo Lourenรงo, or just enjoy that endless sea of clouds below you.

Yes, it gets busy. Tour groups come here too. But somehow, once the sun starts rising, everything quiets down a bit. Thereโ€™s enough space to spread out, and the atmosphere still feels calm.

Watching the Sunrise from the Trail (My Favorite Way)

This time, we decided to do something a bit different and head onto the PR1 trail before sunrise. The trail starts right at the top of Pico do Arieiro and leads towards Pico Ruivo. Even though only part of it is currently open, itโ€™s still worth exploring. If you want a proper sunrise view from the trail, you need to walk about 20 minutes downโ€”otherwise the mountain blocks the sun. Miradouro Ninho da Manta is a popular stop, but we found a quiet spot just before it and settled there. And honestly, this is my favorite part.

Sitting there in the cold, wrapped in layers, holding a warm cup of tea, just waiting. No rush, no noiseโ€”just that quiet anticipation. Then suddenly, the sun appears above the clouds. Itโ€™s one of those moments that never really gets old.

The Timing Mistake Most People Make

We didnโ€™t stay long after sunrise. Not because it wasnโ€™t beautifulโ€”but because we knew what was coming. As soon as the sun is up, everyone from the viewpoint starts heading onto the trail. And within minutes, it turns into a bit of a traffic jamโ€”especially towards the famous โ€œstairway to heaven.โ€ By 7:30 AM, we were already back at the car.

Too early for the cafรฉ or bathrooms to be open (unfortunately), but thereโ€™s something pretty satisfying about driving back to Funchal knowing youโ€™ve already had that kind of experience before your day even starts.

Do You Need a Reservation?

Another common question. If youโ€™re just driving up and watching the sunrise from the viewpointโ€”no reservation is needed. If you want to go on the PR1 trail, it depends on timing. Currently, reservations are required betweenย 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Since we were off the trail by 7:30 AM, there was no need for one, and no one was checking. Just keep in mind that these rules can change, so itโ€™s always worth checking before you go.

Yes, itโ€™s popular. Yes, it can be crowded. But a sunrise at Pico do Arieiro is still one of those experiences that lives up to the hype. If you want something easy and accessible, the main viewpoint is perfect.
If youโ€™re up for a slightly more special experience, head onto the trail before sunriseโ€”youโ€™ll beat the crowds and get a completely different perspective.

And if waking up at 5 AM sounds like tortureโ€ฆ I get it. In that case, you might prefer aย sunset at Pico do Arieiroย (which I personally love even more), or a proper sunrise hike toย Pico Ruivo to escape more of the crowds. Iโ€™ve included all of these optionsโ€”and moreโ€”in my Madeira PR Trails Guide.
